Boron carbide(B4C)is an extremely hard boron-carbon ceramic. discovered in 1899, Boron carbide has a Mohs hardness of about 9.49, which is the third-highest hardness material after diamond and cubic boron nitride. As of 2015, boron carbide is the third hardest substance known, after diamond and cubic boron nitride, earning it the nickname “black diamond”. Boron carbide is used as a bulletproof plate. it was applied widely in industries as wearing resistant material, abrasive. Boron carbide is also the most important ceramic material for ceramic armor. This carbide ceramic is used in tank armor and bulletproof vests. Boron carbide bulletproof plate has good corrosion resistance, great mechanical strength under high temperature and excellent wear resistance.

Boron Carbide Machining

Boron Carbide can be machined in green, biscuit, or fully dense states. While in the green or biscuit form it can be machined relatively easily into complex geometries. However, the sintering process that is required to fully densify the material causes the Boron Carbide body to shrink approximately 20%. This shrinkage means that it is impossible to hold very tight tolerances when machining Boron Carbide pre-sintering. In order to achieve very tight tolerances, fully sintered material must be machined/ground with diamond tools.  In this process a very precise diamond coated tool/wheel is used to abrade away the material until the desired form is created. Due to the inherit hardness of the material, this can be a time consuming and costly process.

Applications of Boron Carbide Bulletproof Plate

-Abrasive field: Surfaces of watches and jewels.

-Refractory materials: As an antioxidant additive in the refractory field.

-Ceramics materials: As materials made of boron carbide products and wear-resistant components used in blasting, sealing, machinery, ships, auto, dies, aviation and aerospace industries.

-Armor tiles: High-density boron carbide armor tiles, bulletproofing seats of helicopters. Widely used in heavy armored protection in planes/tanks/ships, and high-class physical protection.Military Army Security/Special Force/ Military Officers/ Policemen/ Soldiers

-Nuclear industry: Boron carbide is an important material for nuclear applications due to its high absorption cross-section.

-Boriding Agent: Boron carbide is a raw material used in boriding agents. After the treatment, the hardness and the wear resistance of the surface are greatly improved.

-Chemical additives: Because of boron carbide's good chemical resistance, for producing other boron-containing materials such as titanium boride or zirconium boride.

-Solid fuel: Boron carbide-based propellants for ducted rockets.

Packing of Boron Carbide Bulletproof Plate

Standard Packing:

Sealed bags in carton boxes. Special package is available on request.

As a ceramic material, B4C is quite fragile in a lot of cases. The B4C Bulletproof Plate are usually held in plastic bags by vacuum, and protected with heavy foam.

ATTs’ B4C Bulletproof Plate is carefully handled to minimize damage during storage and transportation and to preserve the quality of our products in their original condition.
